Click and Collect Refund UK — Not Ready, Wrong Item, or Never Available

Click and collect gone wrong? UK rights when your order isn’t ready, is the wrong item, or the store can’t fulfil — how to get a refund without the runaround.

Click and Collect Refund UK — Not Ready, Wrong Item, or Never Available — UK consumer refund guide cover

In short (UK): Click and collect still has to deliver the right item, ready when promised. Not ready, wrong product, or never fulfilled usually means cancel and cash refund — not endless return trips. Cooling-off can be weaker than delivery-to-home, but quality and description rights remain. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Ready Means Actually Ready

A “ready for collection” email is evidence they claimed stock was available. If the counter cannot find it, put that in writing with time, store, and order number. You should not have to make multiple unpaid journeys while they hold your money.

Wrong Item on the Counter

Do not feel pressured to “just take it.” Check before you leave when you can. Wrong goods can be rejected; ask for the correct order or an immediate refund.

What to Do Next (High Level)

  1. Keep order confirmation, ready-email, and photos of what was offered.
  2. Note store, date, time, and staff outcome when collection fails.
  3. Request cancel and full refund (or correct item) in writing the same day.
  4. If they insist you wait, set a short firm deadline.
  5. Escalate through retailer complaints, then card chargeback if cash never returns.

What Your Letter Should Cover

Order number and payment; promised collection slot or ready notice; what happened in store; remedy sought (refund or correct fulfilment); deadline.

Common questions

Short answers to common questions on this topic.

What if my click and collect order is not ready when I arrive?
The retailer still needs to supply what you paid for within a reasonable time or as agreed. If stock was never there, or repeated “come back later” fails, you can usually cancel and claim a full refund rather than keep waiting.
They gave me the wrong item — can I refuse it?
Yes. Wrong item or wrong variant is a classic “not as described” / non-conforming supply issue. Refuse or return it and claim the correct item or a refund under the Consumer Rights Act.
Does cooling-off apply to click and collect?
Often weaker than pure home delivery — many click-and-collect contracts are treated as on-premises collection. Faulty, missing, wrong, or never-fulfilled orders still attract CRA and contract remedies. Check how you ordered and what the confirmation says.
The collection window expired — did I lose my money?
Not automatically. If the store never made the order available in time, that is on them. If you simply missed a fair window they clearly communicated and stock was held, terms may allow cancel — still ask for refund of unused payment in writing.
Can the store force store credit only?
If a cash refund is due for non-supply or rejected wrong/faulty goods, vouchers are optional. Ask for repayment to the original card or method.
